General Motors Recalls Nearly 3.8 Million Trucks, SUVs Over Brake Issues

2017 Chicago Auto Show Media Preview - Day 2

General Motor announced a recall of nearly 3.8 million trucks and SUVs in North America to fix a problem with the brakes. The recall covers the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from 2014-2018, along with the Cadillac Escalade from 2015-2017, and the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban and Tahoe from 2015 -2018.

GM says the issue is related to a pump in the power-assist brake system. As the pump ages, it puts out less power than necessary, which can increase stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash. The car company says there have been 113 crashes and 13 injuries related to the problem.

GM states that they are not replacing the pumps, but will instead recalibrate the electronic brake control module to ensure that the secondary power brake assist system will kick in faster when it is needed. The company says the issue is rare and usually occurs when a driver is operating their vehicle at low speeds.

GM says they are contacting owners of the recalled vehicles, who will be able to bring them to a dealership to have the issue fixed free of charge.
