Golf Clap Talks Movement Detroit, Electric Forest, Friendships & Inspirations

Golf Clap -- a locally known and widely respected name in electronic music delivered some of the most exciting moments of Movement Detroit 2017. Whether on stage, at the after party, or chilling with fans in the crowd, these guys definitely made a statement last weekend.

Club 104 Five had the opportunity to talk to these guys, Hugh Cleal and Bryan Jones, about Movement Detroit, Electric Forest, music industry friendships and inspirations, upcoming projects and collaborations. There's no slowing down for Golf Clap, as the duo embarks on a huge 2017!

Golf Clap -- you guys were all over the place this weekend! What was your favorite part of Movement 2017?

This weekend was really something special for us. We played 6 times in 3 days. The best moment was definitely playing our set at the festival on Saturday. Was so good to see everyone there right when we started. To top it off, GRiZ showed up and tagged with us for a bit. It really was one one of our better moments we can remember.

Did you check out any other artists?

Got to see Robert Hood live for a bit which was great. Also saw Lee Foss & Kenny Glasgow at the Repopulate Mars party. Always a treat to see one of our favorites, Mija as well. She came and played with us a bit at the Repopulate Mars party with Ryan Forever. We love them and were fortunate enough to throw our afters with them. Happy birthday Mija!

Your Country Club Disco x FKA Genre afterparty was absolutely crazy! Can you talk about how that collaboration came about?

We actually met Mija last year at Movement. Since then we’ve played a few shows together and really got along with her and wanted to work with her more. The opportunity came up to do a party with her this weekend and we jumped at it. We also had Billy Kenny, Codes, Eyes Everywhere, Greco, & Ryan Forever on the bill.

What's the best thing about playing in Detroit?

We’ve been playing in and around Detroit for so many years now. We know so many people around here. It’s great to always have friends at our shows. Makes us feel comfortable and able to play our best.

Which current artists are inspiring you most right now?

GRiZ continues to inspire us for how he treats his fans and how much he gives back to them. He’s also an incredible live performer and has a lot of stage charisma. Eats Everything is probably our favorite DJ. He runs the label Edible, which is one of our favorites, and also has one of the best podcast series at the moment. Claude VonStroke inspires us by running a great label, throwing amazing parties and still managing to tour the world under two different names. Some others we really respect lately: Jamie Jones, Green Velvet, Mija, and many more.

Electric Forest is right around the corner... What can we expect from Golf Clap at Rothbury each weekend?!

We are playing both weekends. Lots of surprises this year. We will let them be known on our social media that weekend. This is our favorite time of the year, we really love this festival and go every year.

Making it back to Grand Rapids soon? We'd love to have you!

We are always coming back there. Will have a date there shortly I’m sure. (Stay tuned!)
