Unlicensed Dog Death Penalty Reprieve?

Lawmakers in Lansing are planning to vote to eliminate an unenforced law requiring county sheriffs to locate and kill unlicensed dogs.

The Dog Law has been on the books for 95 years.

The state House voted last May to do away with portions of the law, including requirements that sheriffs kill unlicensed dogs and that county treasurers deliver a list of unlicensed dogs to the director of the state agriculture agency. The Senate is expected to pass the legislation on Thursday.

The bill is expected to reach Gov. Rick Snyder's desk soon.

The legislation is being sponsored by Republican Rep. Margaret O'Brien of Portage.
