Plans Move Forward Tonite In The Effort To Clean White Lake

Posted July 21st, 2014 @ 6:43pm by WOOD RADIO news team

Plans to remove a western Michigan lake from a list of toxic hot spots in the Great Lakes region are the subject of a public meeting.

White Lake in Muskegon County was declared a Great Lakes ``area of concern'' in 1985 because of severe environmental degradation, primarily from industrial and municipal wastes. Federal officials hope to make the removal official this year. A public meeting is tonite at White Lake Community Library in Whitehall.

The area includes wetlands at the mouth of the White River and extends to Lake Michigan. The designation was based on a series of specific ecological problems that would have to be fixed before the site could be dropped from the list.
