Liam and Emma were the most popular names for newborn boys and girls in Michigan last year.
That’s according to a searchable database released today (Thursday) by the U.S. Social Security Administration, based on applications for Social Security cards in 2013.
The next most popular boys names: Mason, followed by Noah, Jacob, and Carter. Rounding out the top 10 names for boys in Michigan are Lucas, Michael, Alexander, Jackson and William. For girls, in order of popularity, parents chose Sophia, Ava, Olivia, Isabella, Madison, Charlotte, Amelia, Avery and Abigail.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Michael and William are the only names that also appeared in the top 10 list for either sex 50 years ago, when the top baby names in Michigan were Michael for boys and Lisa for girls; 25 years, ago, in 1989, Michael still held the top spot for boys, with Ashley for Michigan girls.
Nationally, the most popular baby names in the country in 2013 were Noah and Sophia.
