KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo officer saved a choking woman during a traffic stop Saturday, police say.

It happened around 11:35 a.m. in the 4100 block of S. Burdick Avenue, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Officer Jason Gates pulled over a vehicle for running a red light. When he walked up to the vehicle, he found the female driver could not breathe.

He administered back blows in an attempt to dislodge whatever was blocking the woman’s airways, but that was unsuccessful.

Gates then removed the woman from the car and used the Heimlich maneuver, forcing a bite of sausage and bun out of woman’s throat.
